上個星期六與L在觀看電視時，看見新聞報導物價高漲的消息，L有感而發脫口一句，現在他知道為何一個社會會有暴動出現。我想起前些日子看過的一部電影「凡爾賽拜金女」，於是搭腔說，「是啊，我現在比較能夠體會為何會爆發法國大革命。」

珍‧奧斯汀(1775-1817)身為英國攝政時期（the Regency 1811-1820）的年輕女性，夾在英國喬治王朝(Georgian)--喬治一世至四世(1714-1830)與維多利亞時期當中，顯然幸福得多，因為這個時期的女性不像她們母親、祖母那一輩，或是像女兒與其後來的子孫輩得穿著強調女性身體曲線、由鯨骨製成的馬甲(The Boned Corset)。攝政時期的女性服飾走的是展現女性身體的自然曲線，設計靈感源自希臘、羅馬時期雕像，裙子腰線升高至胸部下方，不會特別強調束緊腰圍，挺直腰背的線條。這個從古希臘、羅馬與文藝復興時代尋找美學元素的年代稱為「新古典時期」，影響所及除了這裡所談到的服飾，還影響了英國的建築與藝術等等。

When Sean Devine and Jimmy Marcus were kids, their fathers worked together at the Coleman Candy plant and carried the stench of warm chocolate back home with them. it became a permanent character of their clothes, the beds they slept in, the vinyl backs of their car seats. Sean’s kitchen smelled like a Fudgsicle, his bathroom like a Coleman Chew-Chew bar. By the time they were eleven, Sean and Jimmy had developed a hatred of sweets so total that they took their coffee black for the rest of their lives and never ate dessert.

俄裔美籍作家納伯可夫Vladimir Nabokov撰寫的小說《羅莉塔》(Lolita)於1955年出版，1962年由史丹利‧庫柏力克(Stanley Kubrick)拍成電影《一樹梨花壓海棠》，1997年則由另外一名導演Adrian Lyne重拍，主角找來帶點神經質的傑若米‧艾朗 (Jeremy Irones) 出演男主角杭伯特(Humbert Humbert)。
